THE FLOOR
Revitalization of the existing square.
Creating a space that is welcoming to people—both those who work and live in the neighbourhood and the occasional visitors. For those for whom the square and the Zodiak Pavilion are a destination, as well as for those who see the square merely as a point along their way.
Creating a flexible, dynamic space that offers many possibilities. A place that is intriguing, inviting, and harmonious with its surroundings. A space where one can freely relax, take a moment to sit, create their own area, and also engage with art, entertainment, and culture.
A grid of removable columns that allows for the creation of many different spaces.
Combining flexible spaces for relaxation and leisure with spaces for art and entertainment—the columns are intended to serve, interchangeably or simultaneously, in the creation of both types of spaces.
The designed space is a grid of concrete slabs measuring 3x3 meters, into which 0-88 black steel columns can be inserted as desired. These columns serve multiple functions: they are also solar-powered streetlights, parking for retractable screens, and mounting points for various equipment (hammocks, climbing nets for children, volleyball nets, etc.).
Flexible screens stretched between the columns will allow the space to be divided in various ways, changing the character of the square. Depending on the needs, the surroundings can be transformed into a gallery, cinema, runway, maze, large hall, or a series of smaller rooms, etc.
Additional furnishings for the space will include hammocks suspended between the columns and benches that can be arranged in different configurations.
The columns are arranged so that even after installing all of them, commonly used diagonal pathways across the square remain unobstructed (unless the space's arrangement dictates otherwise—then a pathway along the edge of the square will be functional). Additionally, no columns are placed on the axis of the entrance to the Zodiak Pavilion, allowing the square to be arranged in a way that highlights it.
In the proposed solution, the 3.5-meter steel column is a multifunctional, repeatable element.
-
It serves as a screen holder: Inside each column is a rolled-up screen that can be extended and mounted on a neighboring column. The screen remains taut, allowing it to be stretched to various distances. It is made of weather-resistant flexible plastic.
-
It functions as a streetlight: The column incorporates a lamp in the form of a slim LED strip running nearly the entire height, positioned near the slot from which the screen emerges. This setup also illuminates the screen when it is extended. The column's cap features a solar panel shaped to match the column. This solar power eliminates the need to connect the streetlight to the grid.
-
It serves as an auxiliary component: It can be used to hang hammocks, nets, or other elements as needed.
The concrete floor is divided into segments (3x3 meters), with recesses for columns located at their intersections. These recesses are designed as nests that allow columns to be inserted either aligned with the grid or rotated by 45°, enabling screens to be stretched diagonally across segments as well.
When a column is not present in a given nest, it is sealed off.
